Aston Villa have been told they’d have to submit a ‘special offer’ to land RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner.

Aston Villa are in the market for a few signings to bolster this squad in this transfer window.

Unai Emery’s side are light on the ground in several areas, namely right back and striker, with the Spaniard weighing up his options.

At right back, the Villans have already been linked with Bayer Leverkusen star Jeremie Frimpong, who has a £35m release clause.

Meanwhile, in the forward areas, the Midlands side did come close to making their first signing of the summer after a £10m bid was accepted for Hellas Verona winger Cyril Ngonge, but the Belgian revealed he wanted to stay in Italy.

There is no question that Emery needs to sign a backup striker to Ollie Watkins, especially if Jhon Duran departs and one of those players on their radar was Timo Werner.

Aston Villa linked to Timo Werner on loan

The Sun reported last month that Villa were battling Manchester United to sign the RB Leipzig striker on loan.

It was revealed that they saw Werner as an ideal option to bring in temporarily before signing a “superstar striker” in the summer when Financial Fair Play permits them to do so.

Once lauded as ‘top class’ by Frank Lampard, the former Chelsea striker struggled during his time in the Premier League, but has become available in this window after falling down the pecking order at the Red Bull Arena.

Indeed, the 27-year-old has been restricted to 386 minutes of action this term, however, a recent update suggests Villa could find it difficult to strike a deal.

Aston Villa told to make ‘special’ offer to sign Timo Werner

Transfer insider Dean Jones has told GiveMeSport that Emery should focus his attention on landing Genoa marksman Albert Gudmundsson, whom Villa have scouted, instead of Werner as he would be unhappy if he is not handed regular action.

He’s also been told that the German isn’t particularly keen on returning to England’s top flight after his spell with Chelsea didn’t go to plan.

“I think that when we consider who Aston Villa are likely to sign, you’ve got to think about what another player coming in would be expecting from their own individual standpoint.

“I think someone like Albert Gudmundsson is probably the level of forward that makes more sense. If Timo Werner is to come back to England, it’s going to take something pretty special to convince him to do it.”

Given Werner is a high profile player, he wouldn’t settle for minutes off the bench and would want to start in most matches.

That said, it wouldn’t make sense to sign anyone unless they are an upgrade or don’t mind playing second fiddle to Watkins.

Clearly, Werner ticks neither of those boxes and Villa are better off pursuing Gudmundsson instead.
