Aston Villa are said to be interested in Albert Gudmundsson from Genoa as they look for a new striker option in the January window.
In spite of it being a great season for Aston Villa so far, the January window is still an opportunity for some squad depth to be added.
With the general lack of changes that have been made by Unai Emery so far this season, this won’t be a surprise.
In certain areas of the pitch, there are limited options for squad depth, whether that be for numerical or quality reasons. One of these is the striker position as Ollie Watkins is the only “senior” striker at the whole club.
This isn’t to say that he hasn’t been in excellent form this campaign. With nine goals and eight assists, he has been one of the better forwards in the entire league this season.
His deputy is Jhon Duran who has only racked up two goals in 13 appearances so far this season. Although all of those have come from the bench. Now the Villans have been linked to another striker to add to the conversation.
Aston Villa want Albert Gudmundsson
It is a point to say that Watkins has played every game so far this season and Villa’s reliance on him is clear. As a result, a new striker signing would make sense.
This has now seen Villa be linked to Albert Gudmundsson as a potential option to back up Watkins for the second half of the season.
This has been reported by TuttoSport who have suggested that the Villans are amongst the names who are interested in him.
On that, they said: “Aston Villa have set their sights on versatile Genoa striker Gudmundsson. Unai Emery’s side have reportedly scouted the Iceland international several times this season alongside Brentford and Crystal Palace.

“Aston Villa will continue monitoring the striker until the end of the season ahead of a potential summer transfer.”
In a separate report by TuttoJuve, they have suggested that Genoa would demand a £17m fee for the Iceland international.
With seven goals and two assists so far this season, he has made his mark on Serie A and seen interest come in. With Villa as one of those, he could be an ideal signing as a squad option for the Villans this winter.
As a more experienced head coming in to play ahead of Duran, he could benefit the squad. He would also provide a point of difference to the ever-present Watkins.
