Aston Villa are set to have a quiet January transfer window as it is now confirmed that some rumours are now unlikely to happen.

It has been a positive season for Aston Villa so far but it is no secret they are looking to add some reinforcements.

Despite currently sitting in second place in the Premier League, Unai Emery is keen on making some January additions.

This has seen links to Cyril Ngonge come and go in recent weeks as he seemed to opt for a move within Italy this winter.

There have also been rumours suggesting that Girona star, Artem Dovbyk is of interest to the Villans in the January window.

Right now there appears to be a lack of concrete links to potential targets which could come into the club this month.

John Townley on Aston Villa transfer plans

It has been said that this was ‘expected to be a quiet month for activity’ for Aston Villa and that is coming true. It is also true for the rest of the division with there being a general lack of deals being struck this month.

In a report for the Birmingham Mail, John Townley has suggested that there are plans to make signings despite nothing happening yet.

On that, he said: “Emery has previously outlined that he wants to improve all areas of his squad, with right-back and the forward areas of particular need of reinforcements, however, the January window is always a difficult month to actually increase the level of a squad.”

It is true that getting deals over the line in the winter window has always been a tough thing to do. Villa have always been quiet in these windows with Jhon Duran and Alex Moreno being the only moves this time last year.

There has been discussion revolving around an attacking signing. Continuing on that point, Townley added: “Links to Felipe Anderson are wide of the mark, but Villa are believed to be tracking a number of wingers including Crysencio Summerville and Geny Catamo.

“A striker could arrive this month, but only if they are able to compete for a starting spot with Ollie Watkins, which will be difficult to achieve in January. If Villa were to secure another number nine, then Jhon Duran could depart.”

It is clear that there is an idea of what the hierarchy wants to bring in this month, it is more about finding the right players.

As the window continues and heads towards its eventual end, Villa fans will be hopeful that there can be some incomings to boost Champions League chances.
