Dean Jones has said Aston Villa are looking to let some players go this January transfer window as a report suggests departures need to be considered.

A good first half of the season now sees Aston Villa want to add improvements in depth to their squad in January.

The improvement of the Villans under Unai Emery has been clear for all to see. They now sit second in the Premier League and are after a Champions League spot.

With that being said they are now looking at options to improve their squad and help maintain their superb form.

This has seen links to Cyril Ngonge, Marcos Acuna and Matt O’Riley in the opening week of the transfer window. Now they are turning their attention to letting go of some players to facilitate the potential additions.

Dean Jones on incomings and departures

Despite making few changes so far this season, Emery does have a squad with plenty of depth in certain areas. When it comes to attacking and centre-back options, the Spaniard is spoilt for choice.

With that being said, there are some players on the fringes that are rarely getting a chance in the first team. As a result, some sales would make sense.

Discussing that point with Give Me Sport, Dean Jones has opened up about Villa and their potential moves in the window.

On that, he said: “Yeah, I think that they’ve got to have a mini clear out at Villa and I think that they’ve got to make some big decisions over some players that just aren’t going to fit in.

“At the same time, I don’t think you can get rid of probably all of the players that are on the fringes, because you’re going to need that depth across the second half of the season. So you’ve really got to weigh up who is going to be most useful to you and in case of emergency, but certainly, there’s going to be some exits coming up.”

There would have to be some incomings should certain players be let go. For example, the sale of Leander Dendoncker can’t be made unless another midfielder comes in.

The January transfer window may not pose an ideal time to do a ‘clear out’ as Jones has alluded to. Although allowing some players like Bertrand Traore, who aren’t playing, to move on.

Whatever happens, the Villans usually get the transfer window right and there is no indication it will change now.
