Aston Villa captain, John McGinn has been likened to Matt O’Riley from Celtic, who Villa are interested in signing this month.
The January transfer window is officially open and now Aston Villa will look to make some additions to their squad.
Despite it being a great first half of the season for Unai Emery, the last few games have shown that some squad depth is needed.
With a suspension to Boubacar Kamara and injury to Pau Torres, the Villans have been without two influential stars. This has seen the whole side perform worse and manage only one win in their last three games.
It is safe to say that these games have shown a need for some additional depth in the Villa squad. They have been linked with Matt O’Riley in recent weeks. Now he has been likened to Villa’s own, John McGinn.

John McGinn comparisons made about Matt O’Riley
The Danish international is an all action midfielder who has been one of the best players in the whole Scottish Premiership.
The Celtic man was discussed by Kris Boyd on Sky Sports. He said:”A top-class player you could watch play football all day.”
It has been reported that it will take a fee of up to £25m to tempt the Scottish Champions from letting the Dane go.
With that being said, Dean Jones has been speaking with Give Me Sport regarding the potential signing for the Villans.
On that, he said: “I think you can make comparisons between O’Riley and McGinn. In terms of their profile and what you get from them within a team. I think that O’Riley’s personality would probably fit very well with where Aston Villa are right now.”
With that being said, it appears that even at a hefty price tag, he would represent a great squad option. Especially in the January window. Whether or not the interest will be realised or not is a different question, but will he want the move?
Jones isn’t so sure: “If you’re a Celtic fan or player, he is someone that you definitely do not want to be losing in this January market. I feel like he is probably going to be loyal to them.
“I think he will probably see this season out. But I can totally see why Aston Villa and other clubs might be looking at him right now.”
O’Riley would represent a great bit of business for the Villans this month. Given the apparent need for an improved squad at Villa Park, this would be a great start to the window.
