Aston Villa have been dealt a significant blow in their pursuit of long-term target Marcos Acuna.

Unai Emery expects to add some quality reinforcements to his Aston Villa roster this month.

The Villans want to build on their magnificent start to the season and a successful transfer window would be the perfect start.

Throughout this season, it is no secret that Emery has rarely rotated his squad as much as he would have liked.

Of course, he’s made wholesale changes in the Europa Conference League, but in the Premier League, the starting XI rarely deviates from his strongest side.

With Villa aiming to go deep into every competition, the Spaniard would need to make alterations to his side and perhaps give his star players, namely Ollie Watkins and Douglas Luiz, a much-needed rest.

The main position that Emery wants to improve is in attack. He wants to bring in a winger and plenty of those have been linked, including Cyril Ngonge, Samuel Iling-Junior and even former Crystal Palace winger, Wilfried Zaha.

One area that Emery has also looked to improve in the past is left-back having targeted Sevilla’s World Cup-winning defender Marcos Acuna.

Villa attempted to negotiate a deal for the 30-year-old in the summer, however, talks broke down due to the Spanish club’s asking price.

Now, they’ve been dealt an even bigger blow in their pursuit of the Argentine.

Marcos Acuna suffers injury blow

Writing on their official website on Wednesday, the club confirmed that Acuna is currently injured, although there is no idea how long he will be out for.

“Our Argentinian left-back Marcos Acuña has suffered an injury to his right thigh,” read a statement on their official website. “(It is) A different injury to the one that has been keeping him out this season.”

The Sevilla left-back has had more than his fair share of injury problems, with this latest problem being his third of the campaign so far.

Depending on how serious this problem is, a January transfer may not be possible, but Villa look more than equipped in this area.

Alex Moreno has performed well enough since his return from injury while Lucas Digne’s return to training alleviates the need for Emery to invest in that area.

Villa have two solid left-backs competing for a place in the starting XI when both fully fit and given the need to invest in other areas is greater, their hunt for a new left-sided defender looks as though it can remain on the back burner.
