John McGinn has explained where he thinks Aston Villa ‘need to improve’ but insists Villa are in the running for ‘special things’.

Aston Villa captain John McGinn has been incredible this season for the Villains and Scotland.

The midfielder is enjoying one of his most fruitful seasons in recent memory which has seen him receive heavy praise.

Clearly one of Unai Emery’s most trusted players, McGinn has made it clear he and the boss are on the same page as he said ‘he dreams the same way we dream’.

With Villa currently in fifth and a potential title challenge tipped by certain pundits, McGinn has made it clear where the team need to improve.

McGinn on where Villa need to improve

Speaking with Express and Star, McGinn said:

“When teams come and sit deep, defend with five and six, that’s where we need to improve.

“We need to be more patient, make more runs. It’s something we’re aware of and we’re working hard on but like the manager says all the time we are progressing as a team, we’re getting there.”

McGinn then admitted that while Villa aren’t where they want to be yet, they’ve given themselves a huge chance.

“We’re not quite there yet but we’re giving ourselves a chance to be right in the mix for some special things.”

West Ham is must win

On Sunday, the Villains face West Ham on Sunday at Villa Park in what is a must win game.

Picking up all three points could potentially see Emery’s Villains move into the Champions League positions.

It could also begin to create a gap between those below and Villa as they look to establish themselves as top four contenders.

Winning would also be a massive confidence boost ahead of an important game in the UEFA Conference League.
