Michael Owen has been discussing his view on the Premier League title race, one which he says Aston Villa are in the mix for.

Aston Villa are heading into the second international break of the season in fifth place. The awe-striking 6-1 win over Brighton a few weeks ago ensured that and reminded everyone that Unai Emery has turned Villa into contenders.

Emery has seen his side win five and draw one of their opening games which sees them just four points adrift of the league leaders Tottenham.

The step up from the likes of Ollie Watkins and the signing of Moussa Diaby have been huge factors in this seasons form.

The form of clubs like Villa and Tottenham is what has made an open title race even more open to outside involvement. This has only been benefitted by Manchester City losing two on the bounce.

It is due to all this, Michael Owen has predicted a wide open title race, which Villa could be right in the mix of.

Owen on Villa being in the title race

Owen has named a number of teams which he thinks will be in the title race this season.

“Spurs have been one of the stories of the season so far,” Owen told Premier League Productions via Birmingham Mail. “I love the way they play.

“It has given everybody, Liverpool, Spurs, Aston Villa are up there now as well, it has given everybody a little bit of lift to say ‘okay, this could be a little open now’. Newcastle United are another team.

“So, it’s open. The Premier League is open after results like that. But it’s a marathon, not a sprint, as we know. Manchester City always get better and better throughout the season. But, at the moment, it’s looking really open.”
