One realistic signing from a rival to improve Aston Villa in January

It has been a great start to the season for Aston Villa but if the cup competitions have taught us anything, the squad depth isn’t there. Who could Villa sign to improve that?

Villa have been great as a general rule this season with only games against Newcastle, Liverpool and Legia Warsaw being disappointing.

With that being said, the performances in the Europa Conference League and Carabao Cup have been the most frustrating. Showcasing the lack of strength in depth right now.

One position that the Villains are lacking in, is striker. Ollie Watkins and Jhon Duran are currently the only two at the club right now.

Although that might be the case, defensive solidity is a more pressing issue.

In saying that, who could Villa sign from a rival to help the cause?

Aaron Wan-Bissaka

When Matty Cash isn’t playing, often it is Ezri Konsa playing out of position. This is despite how good he has been at centre-back.

If not Konsa it has been Calum Chambers who, against Legia, almost literally caused Unai Emery to pull his own hair out.

So with all things considered, Aaron Wan-Bissaka could be a great option.

He signed for Manchester United from Crystal Palace in a deal worth around £50 million. It could be costly to bring him in.

With Manchester United’s defensive issues, he might be held on to by the Red Devils.

Let’s say they look to cut their losses and Villa come in for him, he would be a top signing in an Emery system.

As a heavily defensively-minded full-back, he could make the Villains one of the best teams to shut out big teams.

With Matty Cash able to play more attacking games and then the United man to come in to play when Villa have less possession.

This would be ideal for squad depth and he would certainly improve the team.
