Following the news of Leander Dendoncker moving from Aston Villa to Napoli, reports have outlined the conversations had prior to the deal.

The transfer window is starting to finally hot up for Aston Villa after a quiet beginning to the month of January.

It has been made clear that Morgan Rogers is Unai Emery’s number one target to bring in this window with plenty of rumours around him.

The first move of the window saw Villa bring in Kosta Nekeljkovic but he has now been loaned back to Red Star Belgrade.

The Villans react by being linked with other midfield options such as Florian Neuhaus and Mandela Keita. This is in response to a potential sale.

Departures appear to be on the mind as Leander Dendoncker is rumoured to be making a move away from Villa Park. Now there has been a report suggesting the motive behind the move for both sides.

Dendoncker ‘discussions’ with Napoli

Journalist, Sacha Tavolieri, transcribed by Napoli Magazine, has been reporting on the progress of this transfer.

Dendoncker had been a squad player for Villa since joining. During this campaign, he has acted as deputy for Boubacar Kamara in his absence. Now he is on the verge of joining the Italian champions on a loan deal until the end of the season.

Tavolieri suggested that this move for the Serie A giants has been a long time coming. On that, he said: “Napoli have been on the hunt for a new midfielder throughout this month. This after president Aurelio de Laurentiis publicly admitted mistakes had been made and promised the fans signing to strengthen the squad and recover in the second half of the season.”

It is no secret that Napoli have struggled to replicate their excellent form of last season as they have been much worse this season.

Now it has been suggested that the Belgian wasn’t so keen on making a move to Italy when first asked this month.

Tavolieri continued saying: “Napoli get a physical player who has also done well at level of human maturation: he can still grow in the way he plays, initially a month ago he didn’t want to leave Aston Villa and the Premier League.

“He was convinced by Napoli’s project and by the discussions Walter Mazzarri had with him, that he convinced that Naples could be the right idea to recover also from a European perspective.”

Playing more regularly and for a side in the Champions League is certainly an exciting prospect for him personally.

It will be frustrating if Villa are to lose Dendoncker without a direct replacement in the January window there is no doubt about that.
