In the closing weeks of the transfer window, there’s expected to be plenty of action at Aston Villa, both in terms of incomings and outgoings.

Unai Emery admitted that Aston Villa would dip into the transfer market to make further additions this summer but accepted that some players would need to depart.

Diego Carlos is the most likely to leave Aston Villa, with the Brazilian attracting interest from Fulham and West Ham.

Shifting the 31-year-old on could hold the key to Villa landing Lutsharel Geertruida from Feyenoord, who the Villans want to offer competition at centre-back and right-back.

Acquiring a striker to compete with Ollie Watkins is also hot on the agenda in the final weeks of the window, while it appears one could be on his way out.

Cameron Archer set for Aston Villa loan exit as Getafe and Union Berlin want him

Cameron Archer returned to Aston Villa this summer as Sheffield United’s relegation triggered an obligation in his contract which required the club to pay £18 million to re-sign him.

Although he featured regularly in pre-season, the 22-year-old has attracted significant interest from elsewhere, as it looked increasingly likely that Bournemouth would sign him to replace Dominic Solanke.

The Cherries have now moved on Archer and are looking at other targets, allowing other clubs to sniff around, as Fabrizio Romano reports that Getafe and Union Berlin are both ‘leading the way’ to sign him on loan.

Last season, the ‘fantastic’ striker struggled in front of goal at the Blades, scoring just four goals in the Premier League.

That said, United did suffer a harrowing relegation to the Championship and Archer would be better off joining a club with more attacking thrust.

Archer deserves to be the main man somewhere else

Watkins is the main man at Aston Villa and there’s no pushing him off his pedestal, no matter how hard any player tries.

In the absence of the 28-year-old in pre-season, who was granted an extended break after the Euros, Archer has scored three goals in six friendlies, missing only the defeat to RB Leipzig in the States as Villa were playing with 10 men after Carlos’ red card.

Unfortunately, regardless of his strong form, he will be feeding off scraps from the bench when Watkins returns to the starting XI, while he also has Jhon Duran to contend with for minutes on the pitch.

Despite his previous disrespectful actions in the past, Duran is seen as a future successor to the Villa talisman, whereas Archer has reached a point in his career where he needs to be playing regular football.

In a loan spell at Championship side Middlesborough in 2022/23, the talented striker scored 10 goals in 18 appearances, which showcased his incredible finishing ability.

Archer will now be aiming to recapture that form in 2024/25, whether that’s from the bench at Villa or out on loan, with the latter being the more beneficial move for his development.
