The addition of a new centre-back is vital for Aston Villa before the start of the new Premier League season.

As it stands, Unai Emery only has three fit players in this position as Tyrone Mings continues to sit out on the sidelines

On top of this, it appears that Diego Carlos is edging closer to a Villa Park exit. Fulham are believed to be keen on the defender with Villa open to offers.

If the centre-back does depart, it would leave the club with a host of problems if a replacement is not found.

It is believed that Villa are looking to sign Trevoh Chalobah from Chelsea, with the Birmingham outfit now receiving a huge boost in their pursuit of the defender.

Chalobah has been a squad player for Chelsea over the past three seasons. The defender has made 80 appearances in all competitions for the Blues, winning the Super Cup and the Club World Cup in the process.

However, it now appears that the 25-year-old’s career in the capital is now coming to a quick end.

According to Matt Law, Chalobah has been barred from using the Chelsea first-team facilities.

As a result, he has been forced to train with the Under-21s alongside Romelu Lukaku and Armando Broja.

If they can get it over the line, Chalobah would be a bargain for Villa.

Chelsea have played their own hand by sending him to the Under 21s which could allow Emery’s side to get the defender for little.

Only last summer, the 25-year-old was valued at £50 million, but this has plummeted to less than £25 million in 12 months.

However, based on the recent developments Villa could get Chalobah for even less which would be an excellent buy for a player with his CV.
