Aston Villa are set for a massive transfer window this summer as they prepare for the 2024/25 season, with plenty of comings and goings expected.
After a highly successful 2023/24 campaign, Unai Emery now has another opportunity to upgrade his squad.
The Spaniard guided Villa to the Champions League after a fourth-place finish in the Premier League. As a result, additions are expected in Villa’s first team to reflect this achievement.
However, outgoings are also likely with the Birmingham outfit losing nearly £120 million in 2023.

Transfers in
Aston Villa’s first major signing of the summer was Lewis Dobbin. Emery purchased the young Everton winger in late June for around £10 million.
Ian Maatsen was brought in from Chelsea as Emery increased his options at left-back. The defender was signed for a fee of £37.5 million.
Villa confirmed the capture of Samuel Iling-Junior as well as Enzo Barrenechea as part of a double deal. The duo joined from Juventus for a combined fee of £18.6 million.
Villa continued to strengthen their midfielder as they brought in Ross Barkley from Luton. The Englishman returned to the Birmingham outfit for £5 million.
Cameron Archer has rejoined Villa after less than a year away from the club. The striker has been signed back for £18 million due to a clause in last year’s deal that was triggered by Sheffield United’s relegation.
Jaden Philogene rejoined Villa Park less than 12 months after leaving the club in mid-July. Emery’s side activated their matching rights, beating Ipswich to the signing for £18 million. However, the club will only have to pay £13.5 million due to their 30% sell-on clause.
Villa made another big signing in July when they brought in Everton midfielder Amadou Onana for £50 million. The 22-year-old is set to stay at the club until at least June 2029 after signing a five-year deal at Villa Park.
Transfer out
Morgan Sanson is set to depart Villa Park. The Frenchman spent the 2023/24 campaign out on loan to Nice. Now, their manager has confirmed Sanson will stay permanently at Nice after certain conditions of his loan were triggered.
Villa youngster Tim Iroegbunam parted from the Birmingham outfit in June to join fellow Premier League side Everton. The fee was believed to be around £9 million and he is likely to come up against Emery’s side next season.
Douglas Luiz ended his five-year stay at Villa Park in late June. The Brazilian joined Italian giants Juventus for a fee of £42.4 million.
Finish international Viljami Sinisalo signed for Scottish champions Celtic in mid-July on a five-year deal. The fee was believed to be around £1 million for the goalkeeper.
Villa’s record signing Moussa Diaby departed the club after less than a year at Villa Park. The winger moved to Saudi Arabia side Al-Ittihad for £50.6 million.
Youngster Ben Chrisene made a permanent move to Championship side Norwich at the end of July.
Archer departed Villa for the second time in a year as he left for newly promoted Southampton for £15 million.
Out on loan
Philippe Coutinho departed Villa once again in July and returned back to his homeland in Brazil. The attacking midfielder joined Vasco da Gama on a season-long loan.
Louie Barry returned to Stockport County after a successful loan spell last season. The youngster signed a new contract before joining the League One side on another season-long loan.
Despite only signing during June, Dobbin was sent out to Championship side West Brom on a season-long loan.
Defender Josh Feeney has also been sent to League One, with the youngster joining Shrewsbury Town on a season-long loan.
Upcoming talent Kaine Kesler Hayden has joined Preston North End on loan in the Championship until the end of the season.
Goalkeeper Filip Marschall was shipped out on loan to League Two side Crewe Alexandra in July until the end of the season.
Experienced left-back Alex Moreno departed Villa in late August to join Nottingham Forest on a season-long loan. The East Midlands side also have the option to buy the Spaniard.
Lino Sousa was once again sent out on loan as he joined League One side Bristol Rovers on a season-long loan.
Iling-Junior also made a quick departure from Villa after his summer transfer, joining Italian side Bologna on a season-long loan.
Barrenechea was another quick departure as he left Villa to join Valencia on a season-long loan.

Releases
Calum Chambers’ contract was terminated at Villa Park in July by mutual consent. This was to allow the defender to pursue first-team football and he later joined Cardiff.
Loan deals expired
Clement Lenglet’s loan expired at the end of the season. Aston Villa did not have an option to buy and he left Villa Park at the end of the deal.
Nicolo Zaniolo’s loan is set to expire at the end of the season. Villa did have the option to buy the midfielder at the end of his deal but this was not taken up.
Academy signings
Ethan Amundsen-Day signed for Villa in mid-June from FC Copenhagen. The 19-year-old will join the academy side for the upcoming season.
