Aston Villa identify two positions to target but ‘could hold fire’ on January move

Aston Villa have identified goalkeeper and right-back as two positions which they want to sign. This may not be done until the summer window, however, says John Townley.

It has been made no secret over recent weeks that Aston Villa are looking to make attacking reinforcement signings.

This has seen Unai Emery linked to signing versatile forwards like Cyril Ngonge but that deal appears to have gone cold.

The Villans have also been included in rumours linking striker, Artem Dovbyk to the club who is more of a target man.

It must be said that if any of these players were to come in, there would be stern competition for a place in the starting XI.

There are other areas of the pitch and squad which could see new players come in and take their place immediately.

John Townley on Villa interest in keeper and full-back

It has been a quiet window for the whole of the Premier League and not just Villa. This as there has only been two incoming transfers to the league, according to FotMob.

Villa have done some business but this has only been on the outgoings as youngsters have been loaned out. This has seen Ben Chrisene and Kerr Smith make temporary moves while Finn Azaz went permanently.

With that being said, John Townley for the Birmingham Mail has suggested that the Villa do have two positions in mind to bring in.

On that, he said: “Villa want to sign a young goalkeeper either in this window or in the summer. A right-back will also be targeted. But given the limited options in the market, Villa could hold fire until the summer.

Jeremie Frimpong has been linked and will have a release clause of £35 million after the end of this season.”

There have been links to Frimpong for many weeks now but there doesn’t appear to be any concrete reports. No talk of a bid or any discussions has been made which would point away from this deal.

On the flip side, there has been very little talk of signing a goalkeeper. It must be said that Robin Olsen isn’t the most popular figure in B6 due to his lack of ability on the ball. A perfectly serviceable backup keeper, just not what Villa needs.

This has seen Filip Marschall be preferred in recent weeks but it appears Emery wants a better quality number two.

It is good for fans to hear of some irons, somewhat, in the fire regarding the transfer window. Although nothing seems close, there are ideas of where signings could be made.
