Aston Villa are now set to let one of their players with ‘big potential’ depart as he closes in on a move to a European giant.

Transfer deadline day is usually one of excitement for most supporters around the country, as they anticipate talented players arriving.

For Aston Villa, their hopes of having a productive end to the window have been dashed by PSR, as they’re unable to spend unless they sell more players.

Villa wanted to sign Feyenoord defender Lutsharel Geertruida but couldn’t afford the £30 million asking price and now Geertruida is on his way to RB Leipzig.

Unai Emery desperately wanted to sign the 24-year-old, who can play as a right-back or centre-back but now their squad is looking shorthanded.

And it could get even worse if a few of their players depart, with a couple set for a Deadline Day move elsewhere.

Aston Villa ace Enzo Barrenechea set for Deadline Day move to Valencia

Despite only signing as part of a separate deal which saw Douglas Luiz move to Juventus, Emery wants to loan Enzo Barrenechea out for regular game time.

Samuel Iling-Junior – who also arrived from Juventus this summer – has already completed a loan move to Bologna, and Barrenechea could now follow him out the door.

Barrenechea was the subject of interest from Valencia and now talks have reached an advanced stage, with the 23-year-old set to undergo a medical in Spain ahead of a season-long loan move.

That is according to the Express & Star, who claim that a deal had stalled at the last moment yesterday but is now back on.

For Barrenechea, leaving is ultimately the correct move for his development, as competition is strong in Villa’s midfield but Emery does rate the Argentine highly.

What Unai Emery has said about Enzo Barrenechea

Last weekend, Emery said that he was going to name Barrenechea in his matchday squad for Villa’s home clash against Arsenal.

That never ended up happening and the Spaniard didn’t disclose the reason why he was left out of the squad, perhaps as he anticipated him moving on, although he did praise the young midfielder.

Dubbing him for his ‘big potential’, Emery said: “Tomorrow he is in the squad. He is working very well, he is young and has a big potential. His process here with us, it is to try to use progressively his potential getting better.

“Of course, I am happy with him. He is a very good player and a very good person. His adaptation in the squad is fantastic at the moment.”

Those comments could have pointed towards Barrenechea however, he’s now set for a loan in La Liga, where he’ll hope to make a great impression.
