Defensive additions will undoubtedly be at the top of Unai Emery’s shopping list come the summer transfer window.

Injuries have ravaged Aston Villa lately, with several first-team stars out of contention, particularly in the defensive areas.

Ezri Konsa is currently out with a sprained knee, and Diego Carlos pulled up in training with a hamstring issue.

Tyrone Mings’ return to fitness is a bonus, but strengthening in the summer is something Emery must consider.

The Villa boss could look a little closer to home.

Clement Lenglet linked with permanent Aston Villa transfer

Villa’s growing injury list has recently seen Clement Lenglet come to the fore.

The 28-year-old Frenchman has made seven Premier League starts in Villa’s last seven matches.

Before breaking into the team at the end of 2023, Lenglet was linked with a move away from Villa Park.

However, Emery has always insisted upon keeping the defender in the West Midlands.

“He is a very good professional, and we have been working with him every day, trying to understand our style,” he told The Shropshire Star.

“He was even coming in when the players had a day off to do extra work. I am speaking with Lenglet and sending him a message that I am very happy with him. I need him, the team needs him now.

“We agreed a contract between the club and him to help us out. There is nothing in my mind which has changed in that relationship.”

Now, after the Frenchman’s impressive form, reports from Spain are suggesting he could be set to stay at Villa Park.

Mundo Deportivo have suggested a summer exit from Barcelona is now likely.

“He is performing at a good level, and everything indicates that he will be a sale in the summer,” the report read.

Considering he knows Emery well from his time with Sevilla, Lenglet could be an astute piece of business if he signs on permanently.

If he continues his run in the side, there’s every chance of the Spaniard pushing to make the Barcelona defender a regular fixture at Villa Park.

With other clubs likely interested, this is one to watch when the summer transfer window opens in June.
