Aston Villa right back, Matty Cash has been praised by Karen Carney for his adaption to Unai Emery’s system in recent months.

Matty Cash signed for Aston Villa back in 2020 and has been a stalwart for the majority of his time in B6.

Last season, Unai Emery often opted for Ashley Young as a more defensive-minded full-back but Cash has taken that role this season.

With that being said, to begin the season the Poland international played further forward. He even managed to score two vs Burnley.

In recent weeks, the defender has dropped a bit deeper as Lucas Digne has often found himself pushing forward.

What has Karen Carney said about Matty Cash?

It is safe to say that last season, Villa’s Spanish boss wasn’t as keen on the former Nottingham Forest man.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Karen Carney believed this was the case: “Unai Emery thought of him being too attacking-minded when he first came in.

“Now they have a system where it really suits him not running in behind those channels.”

Cash often relies on cutting inside and playing dynamic inside passes to the midfield and forward players.

On his more attacking role, Carney added: “He played right midfield this season as well, but it comes in, he’s the highest point, gets himself a goal, he’s quick, he’s athletic.

“He’s playing like a right winger and he has. Again, obviously, we said played right back, but the versatility really suits the manager and that’s why he’s working really well under him.”

It has been reported in recent weeks that Villa are interested in signing a new right-back due to squad depth issues.

Although this might pose an issue for Cash, in recent weeks he has been on top form and will take some dislodging.

The Polish Cafu has had a very positive season and long may his form continue moving forward.
