Aston Villa star, Douglas Luiz has opened up about Ollie Watkins and suggests just how good he is for this Villa side.
There have been many standout names for Aston Villa in what has been an excellent start to this season, so far.
Under Unai Emery, the improvement of many stars has been clear to see and as a result, there are more eyes on the Villans right now.
This has seen rumours linking players away from B6 with elite clubs sniffing around. Douglas Luiz is one name that has seen links to clubs like Arsenal are refusing to go away right now.
With that being said, his form and admiration for the club doesn’t seem to be waning. This has seen Emery speak out about his future at the club and now Luiz has been discussing another star and his impact.
What has Douglas Luiz said about Ollie Watkins?
Both Luiz and Ollie Watkins have been standouts for the Villans this season and it is obvious when they are missing. The Europa Conference League has seen some rotation but both come back in and are very necessary.
The Englishman has scored six and assisted six in consecutive seasons now which made him one of just four players to do so for Villa. In total, he has contributed to 14 Premier League goals in 14 games, at the time of writing.
His goal and assist against Bournemouth helped him reach that milestone and also helped them secure an away point. Discussing Watkins’ impact on that game, Luiz told the Express and Star: “He is so important for us. He’s a good guy and he deserves this. We’re very happy for him. He saved us on Sunday.”
His late equaliser was superb. His flicked header from Moussa Diaby’s whipped cross took elite goalscoring ability. This is something Watkins is getting better at week on week.
Adding to his admission, Luiz continued to say: “He’s more confident. I think now, at the moment, he is the best player in the squad. He scores goals, makes assists. Everyone is so happy for him.”
With a goal involvement in each game on average, Watkins has become as important as anyone in this Villa team. Given that someone who has been as good as Luiz is making this statement, it speaks volumes about the striker.
Watkins and Luiz have both been great this season and to see the admiration between players is something fans will love to see.
