It was a fantastic weekend to be an Aston Villa fan.

Unai Emery continues his absolute magic at Villa Park with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Premier League giants Arsenal.

The manager and his coaching staff have John McGinn to thank for the three points, with his goal being the difference – although there was a sea of good performances.

Emiliano Martinez was also a squad member to whom Villa owed the victory – he was immense throughout and, of course, caught the headlines in multiple ways.

Emiliano Martinez winds up the Arsenal supporters

Martinez is like Marmite – you either love him or hate him, with Arsenal fans most definitely the latter.

He left the Gunners in 2022 to become a Villan and hasn’t looked back since. The Argentine has since then won the World Cup and thrived for The Lions – cementing legendary status in the game.

He is also notoriously known as a ‘wind up merchant’. The proof was definitely in the pudding with what he did to Arsenal fans after the game.

Emiliano Martinez send message to Villa fans

Whilst Gunners supporters most certainly aren’t too keen on the shot-stopper, Villa fans adore him.

‘The World’s Number One’ chant rang around Villa Park as fans celebrated a win over his former side, which only annoyed the travelling supporters even more.

It appears the feeling is mutual for the love between supporters and keeper – with Martinez sending the Villa faithful a message following the historic victory.

Aston Villa and Unai Emery’s historic victory

The victory wasn’t just special due to the opposition, Emery managed to change Aston Villa’s club history with the win on Saturday.

It has been a record-breaking spell with the Spaniard in charge with many numbers being broken week on week.

But the Arsenal victory provoked something that no Aston Villa side has achieved in 91 years…

Can Aston Villa win the Premier League?

With 16 games played, Aston Villa now sit third in the Premier League, just two points behind leaders Liverpool.

It’s beginning to get to the point where it isn’t out of the realm of possibility that Villa could be a serious title contender this season.

Unai Emery will be remaining calm for now – after all, there is a long way to go yet.
