Aston Villa left-back, Alex Moreno may face a difficult task upon return from injury such has been the form of Lucas Digne this season.

It has been a great start to the season for Aston Villa with them currently sitting in fifth place in the Premier League.

This has been in spite of many injuries to key players that have hampered Unai Emery’s squad so far this season.

With Tyrone Mings and Emi Buendia out for the season, Jacob Ramsey and Alex Moreno have been fighting all season to get fit.

The English midfielder has returned in one substitute appearance but suffered a relapse to his injury. By comparison, the Spaniard made a long-awaited return in an Under 21s appearance vs Swansea City.

What has been said about Alex Moreno?

Following a great season, since signing from Real Betis in January, fans were devastated to learn about the seriousness of the injury.

In his place, Frenchman Lucas Digne has stepped up and become one of the Villans’ standout players this campaign.

Speaking with Give Me Sport, Dean Jones has suggested that a quick return to the starting XI may not be easy for Moreno.

On that point, Jones said: “I don’t have much hope for Moreno getting in this team. Digne has been an underrated asset in that Villa team.”

With that being said, both leftbacks offer different things that can be utilised by Emery this campaign. The Frenchman is useful going forward when it comes to picking out a cross, the Spaniard is much more adept at flying forward and getting to the byline.

Discussing the France international, Jones added: “That’s because they’ve got all the attacking stars who have been hogging the headlines. But if you look at Digne’s form this season, he’s been consistent and impressive. He’s done exactly what Emery wanted from him.”

It is safe to say that Digne has done well this season. Despite some rumours linking him away from the club, he stayed and has found some top form.

Jones finished off by adding: “That’s a blow to Moreno, but he’s just got to wait for his opportunity and hope that, at some point, a suspension or injury means that he does get an opportunity in this team again and that he can make the most of that chance when it comes.

With the quality that the Spaniard possesses he will be back in the first team in no time. Moreno provides a point of difference than already in the squad and as a result, he will find a spot in Emery’s plans.
