Aston Villa fans were in dreamland on Tuesday night as they watched their side kick off their Champions League campaign with a 3-0 win away at Young Boys.

Unai Emery would have known it was vital for his Aston Villa side to get off to a winning start in the Champions League, with Young Boys one of their easier fixtures on paper.

A nervy start was perhaps to be expected with the artificial surface combined with the fact it was Villa’s first fixture in Europe’s elite club competition since 1983.

However, a 27th-minute strike from Youri Tielemans settled the nerves as he continued his brilliant form before goals from Jacob Ramsey and Amadou Onana sealed the 3-0 victory.

The perfect start to the competition, Villa welcome Bayern Munich to Villa Park in two week’s time for their second game in the Champions League.

Bayern sit top of the newly formatted Champions League after a remarkable 9-2 win over Dinamo Zagreb on Tuesday night and Harry Kane and co. will present Emery’s side with a much tougher test than Young Boys.

Speaking after his fine display in Switzerland, Tielemans was asked whether he was excited to face Bayern, to which he responded: “Very excited. I mean every game is going to be really tough.

“Like I said, this new format makes it even tougher because everything is going to be really important.

“It’s going to go down to the details in the end after the eight games and it’s going to be up to us to impose our game and see after our analysis how we can manage that.”

Villa have had a fine start to the season, winning four of their five games in all competitions.

The only side that have beaten the Villans this season is Arsenal and Villa were arguably the better side that day despite eventually succumbing to a 2-0 defeat.

Bayern will provide a tough test but Emery will be confident he can devise a plan to beat the German giants, especially with a raucous Villa Park crowd behind them.

Villa have three games to navigate before then, though, facing Wolves in the Premier League on Saturday before travelling to face Wycombe Wanderers in the Carabao Cup and then heading to Ipswich Town.

Three more wins would see Emery’s players full of confidence ahead of Bayern coming to town on October 2nd.
