Aston Villa missed the chance to move into second place following their 2-2 draw against Ipswich Town on Sunday.
Despite conceding an early goal, Aston Villa fought back with two quick-fire goals from Morgan Rogers and Ollie Watkins, and they were leading at the break.
But then, in the second half, a completely different Villa side turned up because they failed to control the match and were lucky not to lose.
Liam Delap caused the team no end of problems and he must have been thinking how he didn’t score a hat-trick after scoring in either half.
Villa have Emi Martinez to thank for the draw because he produced some top saves from clear-cut chances during the game.
But that shouldn’t hide the abject defending from the Champions League side, which must have Emery pulling his hair out.
One of the big talking points in the summer was Villa’s backline and needing more defensive cover – Ian Maatsen was the only one who signed from Chelsea.
But there was a lot of talk about Diego Carlos leaving and his performances are showing why that was the case.
Tim Sherwood noted how Carlos’ defending for Ipswich’s equalising goal was ‘so bad’ after being sold one way than the other by Delap, as he told Premier League Productions (29/09/24 at 4:00 pm).
Only last week against Wolves, he was making a mistake that led to their opening goal, now his performance has proven to be costly.
Diego Carlos’ defending for Aston Villa against Ipswich
“Carlos, I am not sure what he is doing, he tries to play offside,” said Sherwood. “Then he has to get to him, he has to get to him a lot quicker.
“He then buys the dummy. I mean it was so bad, the defending. But let’s give credit to Delap. He knew who he was up against, he fancied his chances against him, gives him the foot over, takes him onto his left foot and finishes it brilliantly for a double. Absolutely outstanding for that kid.”

Should Diego Carlos start for Aston Villa against Bayern Munich?
There is supposed to be a sense of optimism about Villa’s Champions League clash against Bayern Munich, but that has been dampened quite a lot.
Villa’s ticket pricing for the Champions League has pushed out the ordinary fan, whilst the team’s defensive performances leading up to the game are now leaving many worried.

Harry Kane is an injury doubt against Villa, but whether he plays or not, you can’t see how Bayern won’t score on Wednesday night.
If Villa want to get anything from the match, then they might have to score a few, which is rather worrying because if Bayern score early on, then it could get ugly.
