Martin Keown takes issue with what Morgan Rogers is doing at Aston Villa

Morgan Rogers has got a lot of plaudits for his performances at Aston Villa this season.

When the 22-year-old first joined Aston Villa in January from Championship side Middlesbrough, a few eyebrows were raised and not in a positive sense.

But within a few months of Rogers working with Unai Emery, his performances were starting to show and he was proving to be a top purchase.

That’s why there was a lot of excitement from Aston Villa fans about their attacking midfielder heading into the new season.

Rogers was looking strong in pre-season, so that was just adding to the hype and then the new Premier League season begins.

Villa beat West Ham United on the opening day, but then Rogers wows the crowd against Arsenal, despite the London club coming out as 2-0 winners.

Yet, when you look at his numbers, he only has one goal – against Ipswich Town – and two assists – against Wolves – to his name.

In some aspects, you would say that don’t just judge players by their numbers, but in Rogers’ case, it is valid and they should be better.

Aston Villa’s drab goalless draw against Manchester United on Sunday was a prime example as to why he only has three goal involvements this term.

Martin Keown stated how Rogers is now starting to ‘overplay’ and if Emery had ‘another player to bring on’ against Manchester United, then he would have taken the player off, as he told talkSPORT (07/10/24 at 11:55 am).

Morgan Rogers is overplaying at Aston Villa

“Ross Barkley did well (against Man United),” said Keown. “But he could have been taken off.

“Ideally, if they had the substitutes there to bring on, they would have done so. It was interesting watching the young lad, Rogers. He is overplaying a little bit now.

“With someone else around him or another player to bring on, you could have maybe said to him, off you come, sit with me. Look, less is more sometimes, you have been magnificent. He was overplaying just a little bit and the chances weren’t coming.”

Morgan Rogers vying for an England spot

If Rogers wants to play for England, then he seriously needs to up his game because there is a reason why he hasn’t been selected yet.

That end product, final ball, and decision-making are seriously lacking. If he can fix that, then he will become unstoppable.

Luckily for the player, he is working with Emery, so he will fix that up sooner rather than later.

Nobody is asking Rogers to score or assist nearly every time he enters the pitch, but just to be more simplistic in the final third.
