Aston Villa continued their winning run in the Champions League after clinching a 2-0 victory over Bologna on Tuesday night.

Aston Villa fans will be pinching themselves looking at the current Champions League table, seeing their side top with three wins and zero goals conceded.

Unai Emery’s men were fantastic value for their latest three points as they played some marvellous football to break through Bologna’s defence.

Firstly, John McGinn was compared to Frank Lampard for his free kick to open the scoring. It was intended as a cross but the whip and power saw it nestle into the far left corner.

Jhon Duran, who started just his second game of the season, then netted Villa’s second. Morgan Rogers curled in a teasing cross that was diverted into the net from Duran.

Morgan Rogers stole the show for Aston Villa vs Bologna

It was another special night under the lights at Villa Park and Rogers delivered his latest magnificent performance on the European stage for Emery.

The ‘unplayable’ Rogers was his usual threatening self, bullying his way past the Bologna markers with his incredible upper body strength and running power.

As soon as he picked up the ball in a pocket of space, he left the visitors for dead, completing seven successful take-ons – the most in one game for Aston Villa since Jack Grealish four years ago.

The England under-21 international also played a huge part in Villa’s excellent pressing game, winning the most ground duels on the pitch (9) and making one tackle.

For any youngster watching the Villans No.27, it was a demonstration of how to play the number 10 role to perfection – the only aspect missing was a goal.

Aston Villa players react to Rogers display

Some Villa fans compared Rogers to Ronaldo after what they saw against Bologna, and his teammates weren’t also short of praise for the 22-year-old.

The attacking midfielder posted an image of himself on Instagram after the game with the caption: “Champions League nights at Villa Park.”

Rogers was inundated with replies in the comments as striker Duran said: “There is no comparison with this young superstar,” accompanied by two heart eyes emojis.

Lamare Bogarde was straightforward with his response as the 20-year-old replied: “MOTM”.

Leon Bailey simply commented: “What a player”, while defender Diego Carlos added: “Sooooo good bro”.

Since arriving from Middlesbrough in January, Rogers has earned the ultimate appreciation from his teammates, who perhaps believe he can go to the very top.

In the past, that would have meant moving to a different club but Villa are currently top of the Champions League table and they intend on staying there.
