How returning £35k-a-week star can fire Aston Villa to the Champions League

Aston Villa left-back, Alex Moreno has confirmed that he is back in training and fans are heavily anticipating his return.

The Spaniard signed for Aston Villa in January, on just £35k-a-week, and became one of the most important players in the squad.

The full-back was Unai Emery’s first signing as Villa manager and fans have missed him flying down the left.

Against Liverpool in May, Moreno picked up a seemingly innocuous injury but it has seen him out for up to six months.

With that being said, it looks like he could be back in a matchday squad soon after he announced his return to training on Twitter.

How does Alex Moreno improve Aston Villa?

Last season, Moreno was superb. His combination down the left-hand side with Jacob Ramsey was something to behold.

Despite being a left-back, he often finds himself on the opposition byline swinging in crosses.

With Matty Cash on one flank, Moreno on the other and Boubacar Kamara sitting in, Villa are a solid team nowadays.

This is likely to be a useful asset against teams that are harder to break down. Teams like Brentford and Nottingham Forest often line up with five defenders and can take some time to get through.

The ability to leave opposition managers guessing as to how Villa are going to play is a very useful weapon.

Why Lucas Digne still has a place

Some fans may think that Digne will lose his place once the Spanish full-back is back. This shouldn’t be the case at all.

The Frenchman has proved himself as a top, top player in recent months, making himself rather undroppable.

His ability on the ball and his growth this season has seen him become an error-prone defender, to a reliable head.

With all this being said, Moreno provides a point of difference which could see Villa earn a top four place.
