Aston Villa are said to still be interested in signing Jonathan David from Lille following years of rumours linking him.

Even when Steven Gerrard was in charge of Aston Villa, the club were interested in signing Jonathan David.

Now under Unai Emery, the club hasn’t been shy when it comes to being linked with new attacking reinforcements in January.

Given that Ollie Watkins is the only senior striker at the club, there is a definite need for competition in that position.

With Jhon Duran being linked with a move to AC Milan and his social media activity pointing towards this, a new striker is necessary.

As a result of this, Villa may reignite their interest in Ligue 1 star, David as they move forward on three competition fronts.

Aston Villa going back in for Jonathan David

David is a star attacker who has been called a ‘phenom‘ in recent weeks, such is the quality that he possesses.

It is no secret that Villa have been interested in the Canadian for many seasons with interest going as far back as 2022, according to the Birmingham Mail.

Given that the rumoured price of David is being set at £36m, he could be an ideal addition to Emery’s squad for the rest of the campaign.

This is because he brings a goal threat as he has five goals and an assist in 14 starts so far this campaign, according to FotMob.

These rumours have come from Football Transfers who have suggested that Manchester United are one of the teams also interested.

On that, they said: “David has made it clear that he is eager to move on from Lille and a deal could be struck in the weeks ahead with Man Utd and Villa, both of whom are in the market for a centre-forward with his qualities.

“Aston Villa are seeking additional support for Ollie Watkins, who has been one of the standout forwards in the Premier League this season by scoring nine times.”

This signing would be clever from a squad point of view but also as a tactical point due to the Europa Conference League. Lille are one of the best sides left in the competition and taking their star player could only enhance Villa’s chances.

Given that he is available, wants to leave and could cost less than £40m, he would represent a great piece of business. It is unclear whether or not this is a likely transfer move but it is certainly one fans can wish for.
