Two winners and three losers from potential Lutsharel Geertruida to Aston Villa transfer deal

The summer transfer window is always an uncertain time for a footballer, with those at Aston Villa no different despite the stability that Unai Emery has brought.

Aston Villa have made seven signings this summer, with two of those players having immediately left on loan in Lewis Dobbin and Samuel Iling-Junior.

Enzo Barrenechea looks set to follow that path, with Valencia the most likely temporary destination for the Argentine after signing from Juventus this summer.

Barrenechea and Iling-Junior both made the move from Juve to Villa as part of the negotiations that saw Douglas Luiz go the other way.

Moussa Diaby’s £60 million move to Saudi Arabia has been the other significant outgoing this summer.

Unai Emery is keen to get at least one new player in before Friday’s 11pm transfer deadline and he could get his wish as Villa are pushing for a deal for Feyenoord captain Lutsharel Geertruida.

Ezri Konsa and Leon Bailey the winners if Aston Villa sign Lustsharel Geertruida

Geertruida will not come cheap, with Villa expected to have to pay around £30 million to convince Feyenoord to sell.

One of the reasons Emery wants the Dutchman is his versatility, as he is able to play both centre-back and right-back with no noticeable drop-off in quality.

This is good news for Ezri Konsa, with the centre-back asked to shift to a right-back role on multiple occasions under Emery.

Whilst he is very capable of doing this, the 26-year-old prefers to play centrally and should now be able to build a strong, consistent partnership with Pau Torres.

The other notable winner should Geertruida sign is Leon Bailey.

Bailey is generally the Villa attacker who operates from the right-wing and he could benefit greatly from Geertruida’s vision as well as his quality in the final third.

Geertruida scored a remarkable eight goals and provided five assists in the Eredivisie last season so is a threat going forward.

That will also be helpful for Bailey as it means opposition defenders have an extra worry and this could free up more space in which the Jamaican can operate.

Matty Cash one of three losers of Aston Villa deal for Geertruida

The obvious loser from a deal that sees a player who has been signed for his ability to play on the right side of the defence is Matty Cash.

Cash has been Villa’s first-choice right-back since singing in 2020 but saw his starting spot come under threat as his poor form at the end of season was followed up by a strong pre-season from 18-year-old Kosta Nedeljkovic.

Cash came off early against Arsenal with an injury and was replaced by Nedeljkovic, but both players could suffer if Geertruida signs.

Diego Carlos was strongly linked with a move to Fulham recently and could still leave before Friday’s transfer deadline.

The centre-back was snubbed when Cash came off injured despite excelling in both games against Arsenal last season and that could be telling.

However, if he does not manage to secure an exit this summer then Carlos could see himself slip to fifth choice centre-back with Geertruida signing and Tyrone Mings nearing his return from injury.
