How much money Aston Villa could receive after Ipswich Town bid for Jaden Philogene

Aston Villa could be set to benefit from the sale of a former academy player, with Jaden Philogene set to move this summer.

Unai Emery is preparing to manage Aston Villa in the Champions League after an incredible 2023/24 season saw the club finish fourth in the Premier League.

Despite this achievement, much of the early weeks of the summer have been spent worrying about a potential PSR breach, leading to the sales of Tim Iroegbunam, Omari Kellyman and Douglas Luiz.

The benefit of selling both Iroegbunam and Kellyman being that, as academy players, they represent pure profit in accounting terms.

However, it is the sale of a youth talent last summer that could see Villa receive a cash windfall this off-season.

Ipswich Town make bid for former Aston Villa ace Jaden Philogene

Villa saw fit to sanction the £5 million sale of the now-22-year-old winger Jaden Philogene to Championship side Hull City last summer.

After an impressive campaign in which the England under-21 international scored 12 goals – including a notable Rabona strike – and provided six assists, it is no surprise to see a number of clubs interested in signing him from Hull.

Now, Premier League new boys Ipswich Town have acted on their interest with a double bid for Philogene and his Hull teammate Jacob Greaves.

That is according to The Athletic, who report that Ipswich have made a ‘joint bid in the region of £35 million plus add-ons for Hull City duo Jacob Greaves and Jaden Philogene’.

When Villa agreed to sell Philogene to Hull last summer Monchi included both a buy-back and sell-on clause in the deal.

The terms of the deal stipulated that, if Hull earn promotion to the Premier League, then Villa will have the option to purchase Philogene for £15 million and will also get first refusal on any future sale of the young talent.

It is not clear what percent the sell on clause was agreed at, but if it is assumed to be 20% – which is common in these type of deals – Villa could be set for a boost to their summer transfer kitty.

It is likely that Philogene is valued at more than Greaves, but if it is assumed that the £35 million bid is split evenly for each player, this would mean Philogene’s potential sale would be worth £17.5 million.

If the sell-on fee is 20%, this would see Villa receive an injection of £3.5 million.

Whilst this may not seem a significant amount of money for a Champions League club, that alone falls just short of balancing out the £5 million signing of Ross Barkley that was confirmed earlier this week.
