Aston Villa believe they can sign Clement Lenglet for a ‘decent’ transfer fee when the Frenchman’s loan spell concludes in the summer.

Since the turn of the year, the 28-year-old has emerged as an important part of Unai Emery’s plans. Diego Carlos, Pau Torres, and Ezri Konsa’s injuries saw a chance present itself, and Lenglet has taken it.

There have been suggestions that Villa are looking to make the loan permanent, although there is no obligation to buy within the current agreement.

With much to decide regarding Lenglet’s future, Aston Villa News spoke exclusively to HITC journalist Graeme Bailey about the Frenchman.

Bailey said: “Obviously, the centre-half’s Lenglet’s future will be an interesting one. He’s been playing a lot recently. I think that’s a conversation they’re going to have.”

The HITC journalist also confirmed that Barcelona are “desperate” for the 28-year-old to depart, which could lead to Villa landing a cut-price deal.

“They [Villa] think they can get him for fairly decent money in terms of transfer fee anyway; Barcelona are desperate for him to go,” he explained.

“As it stands now, I wouldn’t be surprised if he was taken on.”

What has Unai Emery said about Clement Lenglet?

Considering Lenglet’s consistent presence at the heart of Emery’s defence, it feels like making the move permanent is best for all parties. He’s evidently improved from his time at Tottenham and is part of an excellent defensive unit at Villa Park.

Speaking on Lenglet back in December, Emery said, “He is a very good professional, and we have been working with him every day, trying to understand our style. He was even coming in when the players had a day off to do extra work.

“I am speaking with Lenglet and sending him a message that I am very happy with him. I need him, the team needs him now.

“We agreed a contract between the club and him to help us out. There is nothing in my mind which has changed in that relationship.”
