Aston Villa are said to be one side interested in signing Villareal star, Alex Baena in January as his release clause becomes apparent.
It has been an excellent start to the season for Aston Villa who currently find themselves sitting in fourth place in the Premier League.
With Unai Emery’s side performing to the top of their abilities, the January transfer window poses an opportunity to improve.
There have been many rumours surrounding the club in recent weeks. These have gone from suggesting right-back cover is a priority to attacking reinforcements.
Now it appears an attack-minded midfielder is on the cards if the most recent reports are to be believed.

What has been said about Alex Baena?
It is clear that there is a pretty good relationship between Villa and Villareal. First Emery moves to B6 then Pau Torres follows him in the summer. It would have you believe that there is a good negotiating ability between the two clubs.
With that being said, the Villans are once again showing interest in Alex Baena who they had been linked to earlier in the year.
As reported by SportsWitness, it appears a winter move could be possible. On that, they said: “It’s claimed the Premier League side, who have been interested in the player since the summer, can make a move for him in January.”
With interest being there for a prolonged period it would make sense that Villa want to come back in for Baena. The Spaniard has had a positive season as he has averaged a goal or assist almost every other game in LaLiga.
He ranks in the top 10% for chances created amongst midfielders while also ranking in the top 1% for shot attempts. All according to FotMob.
Adding to the previous, SportsWitness said: “The attacker has a contract until 2028 and AS say it includes a €60m release clause. They also add the Spanish club have changed their stance and are willing to negotiate his sale for €40m, a figure that Aston Villa may be able to match in the winter market.”
Given how much players of high-quality cost in today’s market, sub £40m would be a great deal for Baena. The question comes whether or not Villa would want to spend that amount in January or wait until the summer.
Either way, Baena would represent a top signing and would fit in well with Emery’s set-up at Villa Park.
