Aston Villa are in ‘pole position’ to sign a player who has previously spent time at the club on loan.
It has been an incredibly busy start to the summer for Aston Villa, with no time to waste in the club’s quest to get their squad Champions League ready.
However, the focus of the early weeks of the summer has been mainly on departures, with Villa very mindful of the 30th June Premier League PSR deadline.
Sales are needed to ensure Unai Emery‘s side comply with the spending rules and this has seen Tim Iroegbunam join Everton for £9 million, whilst deals that will see Omari Kellyman, Jhon Duran and Douglas Luiz all leave the club look likely.

Once the end of June deadline has passed, Villa can start to focus their attention on the players they want to bring in to bolster the ranks and it looks as though they have identified a former star as a target.
Aston Villa targeting Tammy Abraham return
Italian club Roma are looking to offload some players this summer in a bid to raise funds for manager Daniele De Rossi.
Villa could look to capitalise on this to secure a deal for Tammy Abraham, who scored 26 Championship goals to help Villa secure promotion via the play-offs whilst on loan from Chelsea for the 2018/19 season.
Now 26 and out of favour following a lengthy absence through injury which saw him miss almost all of last season, a report in Il Romanista claims that he is one of the players Roma are willing to let leave this summer.
According to the report, Roma have identified Abraham as ‘one of the main suspects’ to leave this summer, with the club looking for a fee of around £21 to £25 million for his services.
Villa are named as the club in ‘pole position’ to sign the striker, with a move expected once the anticipated sale of Duran to Chelsea is completed.

Villa wanted Abraham to return to the club following their promotion in 2019, but Chelsea were keen to keep hold of him given their transfer ban at the time.

Frank Lampard was in charge of the Stamford Bridge at the time and was keen to utilise the club’s young talents in the absence of being able to make signings.
However, once he was replaced by Thomas Tuchel in January 2021, Abraham found opportunities harder to come by and made the decision to head to Italy and seek regular football at Jose Mourinho’s Roma.
The move paid off emphatically, with Abraham scoring 27 goals and providing five assists in his first campaign.
However, he has struggled to repeat that form since and is now set to leave Roma.
Tyrone Mings played alongside Abraham at Villa and is a big fan of the centre-forward.
Speaking to Sky Sports ahead of the 2018/19 Championship play-off final, Mings was full of praise for Abraham as he said: “He has everything and he is very difficult to play against.
“He is a big lad but he has such good feet for his size, and his goal record speaks for itself.
“He scores so many different types of goals. You know if he gets a chance that he’ll put it away more often than not.”
With Mings hoping to put last season’s injury troubles behind him, Villa fans could see the pair reunite at Villa Park in a Champions League campaign next season.
