Aston Villa could be poised to trigger Sporting Lisbon’s Pedro Goncalves’ release clause as the January transfer window approaches.

In each of the last few seasons, Aston Villa have been linked to the Portuguese star and they could take their chance now.

With the signing of Moussa Diaby being opted for instead of the Sporting man, Villa may come back in for him.

It is no secret that Unai Emery is after attacking reinforcements, with several forwards linked in recent weeks.

Who is Pedro Goncalves?

Despite being on the books of Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2018, he never played a game in the Midlands.

A move to Famalicao came next and after 15 goal involvements in just 40 games, Liga Portugal giants came in for him.

Goncalves moved to the capital in a deal worth £13 million and he has been nothing short of a success.

Since signing, he has contributed to 96 goals and assists in 140 matches, winning four trophies.

Adding to this with a top scorer and Player of the Season award for his troubles.

This excellent form has seen his release clause set in his contract at £80 million. Despite this, there is still plenty of interest.

Should Aston Villa sign him?

Considering the players that the Villains are looking to bring in, Goncalves could be the best player available.

The only sticking point of his singing could be his fee. At £80m he would be Villa’s record signing by over £20m.

He comes with versatility and redoubtable quality which would be more than useful to Emery’s set-up at Villa Park.

His eye for goal and ability to create has seen him become a desirable player and for him to be part of the squad could be great.
