One former Aston Villa manager has approached a vacant international job this summer, six years after his Villa departure.

The summer transfer window has been full of twists and turns so far at Aston Villa, as Unai Emery assesses his squad ahead of the upcoming campaign.

Monchi has worked tirelessly on the arrivals front, welcoming seven new faces to the squad, with more expected to follow.

While the focus in B6 is very much on the transfer market, another piece of movement has come to light regarding a former manager.

Former Aston Villa manager Steve Bruce holds talks with Jamaica

The news comes as a unexpected contender for an international job has come forward, but it’s not a candidate to succeed Gareth Southgate.

The Daily Mail have reported that former Aston Villa boss Steve Bruce has ‘held talks’ with Jamaica over the vacant managerial position.

After being sacked by West Brom in October 2022, Bruce seems to be looking for something new, with international football on his radar.

Jamaica have been without a manager following Heimir Hallgrimsson’s resignation earlier this summer, with Bruce now considered a ‘serious contender’ for the job.

It would be a shock to see the former Villa boss take charge of the Reggae Boyz, who are on the hunt for a manager to unlock the talent in their ranks.

Bruce a surprising candidate for the international job

Following the disappointment of Jamaica’s early Copa America exit, the Carribean side are looking for the right coach to take them forward.

Bruce could be that figure, having a managerial CV that includes taking charge of 12 English clubs over his extensive coaching career.

Villa were of course one of those clubs and despite many not looking back on Bruce’s time in Birmingham with any real encouragement, the Englishman did what was required to restore the hope at Villa Park.

It’s easy to forget that when Bruce took charge at Villa, he became the seventh manager in a 12-month period to take the reins, with his arrival calming the storm ready for Dean Smith to later secure promotion.

The former Manchester United defender’s expertise helped Villa overcome what could have been a significantly detrimental situation, with his work needing to not be forgotten amid the successes of Emery’s current side.

It would be interesting to see Bruce return to management after almost two years out of the picture, with the Jamaican national team being a possible next destination for the 63-year-old.
