Aston Villa have announced that right-back Kaine Kesler-Hayden has signed a new contract at the club, but what does it really represent?

Unai Emery and Monchi aren’t taking it slow this summer, with plenty of business already completed at Aston Villa

Along with five new signings, three departures have been confirmed, with Douglas Luiz, Omari Kellyman and Tim Iroegbunam bidding farewell to Bodymoor Heath.

The Villans remain active in the transfer window as speculation continues to swarm, with the latest news being the contract extension of academy product Kaine Kesler-Hayden.

Kaine Kesler-Hayden signs contract extension at Aston Villa

On Monday evening, it was announced that Kesler-Hayden had penned a new deal at Villa, extending his stay beyond his original contract expiration date of 2026.

The youngster spent the first half of last season on loan at Plymouth Argyle before being recalled by Emery, where he featured sporadically for Villa’s first team.

Upon signing his new contract, the Villa academy product posted on X saying ‘onwards and upwards’, as he prepares to continue his journey at Villa Park.

The Birmingham-born starlet is clearly valued by Emery and Monchi, but tying him down to a new deal doesn’t necessarily mean his future lies at Villa.

Is Kesler-Hayden’s contract a plan for Unai Emery or Monchi?

Naturally, a contract extension would assume that the player is wanted at the club for the foreseeable future however, given how Villa’s transfer window has gone so far, it could mean something else.

In the instance of Kesler-Hayden, a talent made at Bodymoor Heath, tying the right-back down to a new deal could indicate a possibility of generating a higher profit from a future sale.

Not many would have expected Kellyman to depart so prematurely this summer, but for a fee of £19m, Villa had no choice but to cut ties with the starlet to ease their PSR concerns.

Now that Monchi and Emery have seen first-hand how beneficial the sale of an academy graduate can be, Kesler-Hayden’s new deal may have been to maximise the potential of a future transfer.

Alternatively, the defender’s contract could symbolise how much Emery values him ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.

Last season, the Spaniard of course recalled the 21-year-old from loan and handed him his Premier League and European debut for the Villans.

A player with a lengthy contract is worth more, and equally, a club offering a young talent a new deal points to an exciting future.

It will be interesting to see where Kesler-Hayden’s new deal takes him, whether that be for the benefit of Emery’s squad or the benefit of Monchi’s finances.
