Ollie Watkins happy to go ‘under the radar’ after England call-up

Ollie Watkins has admitted he doesn’t care about his public image as long as he performs on the pitch, following his England call-up.

Watkins is taking part in his first England training camp since March 2022 and has made an omission about the reasoning.

Despite only ever making seven appearances for his country, the Villa man has two goals.

He has averaged a goal every 67 minutes for Gareth Southgate’s side. Even with his top club form, he hasn’t been able to nail down a place.

What has Ollie Watkins said?

As mentioned, this is Watkins’ first camp for over a year. This is despite some calls for him to be in the squad over the past season.

Watkins understood why he wasn’t called up earlier: “I started the season off well but because I maybe didn’t have any goals, I didn’t get called up.”

The Villa striker hadn’t found the net in 12 Premier League games until he scored against Chelsea.

Since then he has scored three and assisted two, seeing his name included in the England squad.

Discussing his form, the forward said: “Then, I score four in two games and it gets people talking. I know I have been producing on the pitch since Unai Emery came in.

Harry Kane is England captain, he isn’t going to be dropped. This can make the striker role a poison chalice for the Three Lions.

With that being said, the striker is very quiet. Comparing him to some players out there, he keeps himself to himself.

That could play its role in him being out of the squad: “You get some players that are just likeable and out there. I’m not really too fussed about that. I just like playing football.”

Watkins is in great form once again and long live his spell in the England squad.
