‘Clearly’: Villa penalty dismay backed up by Alan Shearer

Alan Shearer and Danny Murphy have agreed with Aston Villa fans, in believing they should have had a penalty for a push on Ollie Watkins.

Villa travelled the short journey to Molineux looking to rid the hoodoo away to Wolves. Five out of the last six have ended in defeat.

Watkins and Matty Cash had chances before Hwang Hee-Chan eventually gave the Old Gold the lead on derby day.

Pau Torres’ first goal for the Villa came just minutes after the home side’s opener, to level the scores.

What was the penalty incident?

Leon Bailey laid the ball through to Watkins who appeared to have the goal at his mercy with limited time left in the game.

His shot on first view looked to be poor as he slipped while shooting and the ball crashed into the side netting.

On second viewing, it was clear that Matt Doherty had pushed the English striker and as a result, he missed his attempt.

After a short VAR check, the onfield decision was agreed upon. This much to the dismay of Watkins, Emery and the Villa faithful.

What have Alan Shearer and Danny Murphy said?

On Match of the Day 2, there was no thought in anyone’s mind that it wasn’t a penalty.

Summed up easily by Murphy, saying: “That’s a penalty.”

Expanding further, the former Liverpool man said: “It’s a classic case of because he got the shot off, they didn’t give it. If he’d have just gone over and left the ball, they’d have given it.”

In today’s game you get nothing if you don’t go down, but risk the chance of being cautioned for simulation if you do. It is all about small margins.

Shearer knows all there is to know about being a striker and was under no illusions.

Explaining his reasoning, he said: “Clearly, he shoves him, enough for him to be off-balance there. That’s why he misses the target as he does. For me, that should have been a penalty.”

A tough one to take given the eventual draw. These things happen over the course of the season and to take a point is still positive.
