Aston Villa’s transformation into a Champions League outfit has been down to plenty of reasons but one influential figure who has gone under the radar is Monchi.

Monchi joined Villa in 2023 as the club’s new president of footballing operations.

The Spaniard is well-known throughout the footballing world and had previously worked at Sevilla with Unai Emery

Here, he helped discover multiple stars such as Jesus Navas and Sergio Ramos as the Spanish side won numerous Europa League titles.

At Villa, he has continued this legacy as he has helped discover stars such as Morgan Rogers and Kosta Nedeljković.

Now, the Spaniard has revealed his transfer strategy at the Claret and Blue side in a recent interview.

Villa are no stranger to exploring other markets. Many of their current squad have come from all parts of the world to help Emery with his project.

In an interview with Ole, Monchi explains that a lot of work goes into the process of scouting players before negotiations take place.

One segment of his interview stated: “I plan the transfer market with a scouting department and a data department. Data is important but not infallible. We have to shorten the time taken to make decisions and reduce the margin of error. We oversee approximately 32 championships divided into three levels (class A, B and C). Argentina is class A.

“The coach chooses the profiles he needs, not the names. We select a list, we refine it to around 15 players and at that stage, I sit down with Emery and we choose four or five. With those, I start to negotiate to see conditions, salary, possibility of leaving, etc. From there the chosen one finally comes out.

“Money opens up opportunities but it doesn’t bring you success. Aston Villa have invested a lot but they are also one of the biggest earners. We reinvested what we had generated, but we are still a long way from the clubs that dominate English football.”

What Monchi has done at Villa is nothing more than sensational. How he managed to guide the club through the summer given the impending FFP restriction was miraculous given the squad was barely weakened.

This combined with the tactical skill of Emery has ensured that Villa are now one of the best clubs in the country.

Given the skill of the two Spaniards at Villa, there is no suggestion that this rise is going to come to an end anytime soon.

Therefore, not only is it vital that the duo are given all the resources they need, but that the Claret and Blue side can keep hold of them long-term.
