Success has almost come naturally to Villa recently. After reaching Europe for the first time in over a decade, Unai Emery has returned Villa Park to the Champions League.

Much of this can be attributed to Villa’s success in the transfer market. Emery brought players such as Pau Torres who has gone on to be crucial for the club.

Monchi is a highly-regarded Sporting Director in the world of football.

In his playing days, Monchi was a one-club man, sticking at Spanish side Sevilla as a goalkeeper until his retirement in 1999.

From here, he was appointed as the director of football at the club in 2000. Here he would stay until 2017. In this time, Monchi discovered several players that would go on to be world-class including, Ivan Rakitic, Jesus Navas and Sergio Ramos.

This was done by creating a network of over 700 scouts around the world which helped him source numerous profitable bargains. In turn, Sevilla then saw success on the pitch, winning three major domestic cups as well as five Europa League titles between 2000-17.

He would then have a brief spell at Italian side Roma until he returned to Sevilla once again in 2019, overseeing another two Europa League titles.

The duo did work together in a highly successful period at Sevilla. Emery was the manager of the Spanish side from 2013-16, lifting three Europa League titles.

As a result, Monchi commented that the manager’s presence at the Birmingham club was a decisive factor in joining.

In September he told Aston Villa: “Obviously, the presence of Unai has been almost the decisive reason to come to Birmingham.

“He is currently one of the top-level coaches in the world of football, with an infinite capacity to work and an eagerness to continue growing.

“I have also worked with with him and a large part of his team (Javi, Pablo, Victor, Moises…) previously, for three-and-a-half years in Seville, where we achieved very important sporting achievements.”
