Former Aston Villa man, Gabby Agbonlahor has made a claim, suggesting that Emi Martinez is the best in his position, in the world.

It has been a great year for Aston Villa and Emi Martinez as there has been plenty of success between the pair of them.

Villa under Unai Emery achieved what seemed like an impossible goal, achieving European football for the first time since 2010.

With Argentina, Martinez won a historic World Cup which saw Lionel Messi lift the famous trophy for the first time. As years go, it doesn’t get much better.

Since signing for the Villans in 2020, the former Arsenal man has been nothing short of a sensation. After years of goalkeeping uncertainty at Villa Park, Martinez came in and made that role his own.

With all that being said, he won the Yashin Award for best goalkeeper at this year’s Ballon d’Or ceremony. This came to the delight of Villa and Argentine fans but not so much from the wider footballing world.

What has Gabby Agbonlahor said about Emi Martinez?

Gabby Agbonlahor is a well-known and liked figure with the Villa faithful given his long service and plenty of goals for the club. Since his retirement, he has become a very outspoken figure, especially on TalkSport in recent years.

He often speaks out about Aston Villa and is one of the only pundits out there who discusses the club in longer-form chats. This has made him more popular with fans, as his reputation took a dive in Villa’s relegation…

On Villa’s number one, Agbonlahor said: “I said a few weeks ago that he is the best goalkeeper in the world and everyone was like how?”

There is no shortage of great goalkeepers across the world that is for sure. Even the Premier League has stars like Ederson, Alisson and Andre Onana, but none of those have won the World Cup.

On that exact point, the former Villa man added: “He’s won the World Cup, the form he had at the World Cup, the form he’s had since joining Aston Villa. Not just in the last year, outstanding.”

It is true that since Martinez signed for the Villans he has been superb and has helped transform the club. Not only that but his national side has gone from strength to strength in recent times winning back-to-back major honours.

In the record-breaking win against Tottenham Hotspur, the Argentine was superb once again. He made multiple top saves and played a huge role in helping secure all three points.

On his performance, Agbonlahor finished by saying: “There was a save he made yesterday from Hojbjerg, where some keepers let that in because they haven’t got the size of Martinez and he’s so good with his feet as well.”

A great player and a great year, Agbonlahor’s claims will be backed by Villa fans.
