The brother of Aston Villa captain, John McGinn, Paul has suggested that personal accolades will only come should Villa win the Premier League.

It has been a great season for Aston Villa which now sees them sitting pretty in second place in the Premier League.

Under the management of Unai Emery, the rise of the Villans has been well-documented and loved by their fans.

This has seen many players stand out and improve, from Ollie Watkins to Douglas Luiz, there have been plenty of great performances.

Plenty of plaudits have come in for the Villa’s best stars and this has also seen transfer links away for some.

With that being said, in John McGinn Villa have a capable and steady player who isn’t linked away and is captaining the Villans to success.

Paul McGinn on John and personal accolade potential

It must be said that McGinn has been superb so far this season. According to FotMob, he has five goals and two assists in the Premier League this campaign. This includes a huge goal against Arsenal at Villa Park.

Given the standards of his performances, he has been one star that has been heavily praised. Despite this, he isn’t discussed in as high regard as some other players in the league.

This was on the mind of his brother, Paul, who has opened up to the Daily Record about the Villa skipper’s season.

Discussing him, he said: “I think John would need to win the league to get that Player of the Year award. I suppose they’re not far away from that – but it is a big ask. You need a bit of luck injury-wise as well but he is having a dream season.

“It just goes to show you in football how much things change. A little over a year ago people were saying he wasn’t playing very well. I said to him at that point ‘John, it’s just football'”

At the beginning of last season, he was named as captain by Steven Gerrard. This brought added pressure and the Scot’s performances seemed to drop as a result. Now he is one of the most important players at the whole club.

McGinn went on to say: “He’ll probably get written off again soon and it’s sad but that’s just football. Sadly you’re only as good as your last game to some people and that’s the way it goes. I’m just glad to see him doing so well, leading that team and Scotland.”

There are ups and downs in football and right now McGinn is on the up with Villa. Long may his great form continue.
