Unai Emery was appointed as Aston Villa head coach in October 2022, taking over from Steven Gerrard.

Since his arrival in the dugout, Unai Emery has overseen an incredible turnaround in Aston Villa’s fortunes. From struggling the bottom half of the Premier League table, the Spaniard led the club to a seventh-place finish, securing Europa Conference League football for the upcoming season.

Full-back Matty Cash has been a key figure for the Villans under Emery. The 25-year-old, speaking to Birmingham Live, has recently given his view on how Emery’s arrival has impacted the club. Cash said, “since the manager came in, you can see the improvement in players and us as a team. The style which we created last year was fantastic and it was only over a short space of time so I think the level will crank up…A lot has changed, to be honest, no disrespect to other managers because everyone has their own identity, but the manager has come in and has been really good…He’s a workaholic…it’s fantastic to work with him and to play under him.”

Cash even expanded on how Emery has shaken-up the coach staff at Villa Park: “he has brought in great staff…we have full-back coaches…we have striker coaches too. It’s all another level.”

Aston Villa on the right track

Aston Villa face a tough challenge in balancing their Premier League ambitions with their European commitments next season. However, Emery is an expert in this arena. The ex-Arsenal boss has won the Europa League four times – three times with Sevilla, and once at Valencia.

Given Emery’s pedigree, and the exciting influx of talent into the club, with Youri Tielemans and Pau Torres arriving this summer, it seems the best is still yet to come for Aston Villa.
