Aston Villa loanee, Morgan Sanson has opened up about his time with the club and the reasoning behind him leaving.

Over the past few years, Aston Villa have usually failed to make a positive signing with the majority performing well.

With the owners, hierarchy and management of Unai Emery, the Villans have done superbly to make good signings.

From Pau Torres this summer and Boubacar Kamara last campaign, there have been plenty of positives to take.

Signings do come with their risks and other additions like Philippe Coutinho haven’t done so well and they have since moved on.

Now a signing who may have not gone so well, Morgan Sanson has spoken out about his difficult spell with the club.

Morgan Sanson on his Aston Villa spell

Back in January 2021, Aston Villa signed Sanson from Marseille in a £14m move in a move which excited fans. In two years in B6, he was only able to accrue 24 appearances and score one goal, according to FotMob.

The Frenchman has featured under three different managers at Villa Park but hasn’t been favoured by any of them. There have been plenty of injuries which have hampered his time with the club and limited his game time.

In an interview with RMC Sport, Sanson has opened up about his time with the club and what has gone wrong.

On that, he said: “It was complicated because I was injured nine to ten months out of my first twelve months there. I had a series of injuries and I had Covid twice. Nothing worked out for me.

“I made the decision to leave when Unai Emery arrived, even though he would have liked to keep me. I told him that me and Aston Villa were over.”

It appears that the decision was mutual between club and player but the midfielder pushed it through himself. With that being said, there has to have been some sort of issue which caused his desire to leave the club.

Continuing, Sanson added: “Something there was wrong I did it again in Strasbourg. I was sure of myself and my qualities but certain things went very badly with a coach at Aston Villa, it was a bit unfair. The problem is that it was Steven Gerrard who arrived instead of Unai Emery.”

The spell of Gerrard at Aston Villa is one that isn’t remembered fondly by fans and it appears the players didn’t enjoy it either. It is frustrating that fans never saw the best of the Frenchman after a great run with Marseille.
