Unai Emery has triple Aston Villa selection headache to solve ahead of West Midlands derby vs Wolves

Aston Villa have made an excellent start to the season and their highly competitive squad makes picking a team difficult for Unai Emery.

Aston Villa have collected nine points from a possible 12 in the Premier League after winning against West Ham, Leicester City and Everton.

Unai Emery’s men carried their impressive league form across to the Champions League on Tuesday night, as Villa secured a comfortable 3-0 win over Young Boys.

With many star performers to choose from at the Wankdorf Stadium and equally quality players waiting in the wings, Emery is served a selection dilemma ahead of their clash against Wolves.

Here are three selection headaches he needs to resolve…

Should Leon Bailey start vs Wolves?

Leon Bailey suffered a hamstring injury in the 2-1 win over Leicester before the international break.

Luckily, the issue was only minor and after missing the dramatic victory over Everton, he returned to the squad against Young Boys.

In normal circumstances, Bailey’s position on the right flank would be secure however, given the form of Jacob Ramsey – the midfielder who replaced him against Leicester – it’s hard to make a case to drop him.

Ramsey capped off his Champions League debut with a goal on Tuesday while his all-round performance should warrant a start on Saturday, leaving the Jamaican waiting on the bench.

Lamare Bogarde vs Diego Carlos

Since Matty Cash suffered an injury in the loss to Arsenal, youngster Lamare Bogarde has assumed responsibility in the right-back role.

Despite looking promising in wins over Leicester and Everton, Bogarde struggled against Young Boys, with the 20-year-old hooked at half-time for Diego Carlos.

This saw the Brazilian slot in at centre-back while Ezri Konsa was shifted across to right-back as Carlos performed admirably in the second half.

Whilst it would be a tad harsh to drop Bogarde completely, the display of Carlos in the Champions League has given Emery food for thought and perhaps this is one change he makes.

Ollie Watkins vs Jhon Duran

After getting off the mark with a brace against Everton, Ollie Watkins made his debut in Europe’s elite competition and was unfortunate not to score.

Watkins saw his goal get wrongly chalked off for handball in the first half, with Jhon Duran replacing the Englishman on the hour mark.

At first, Villa fans would have feared the worst when Watkins had ice on his ankle after coming off but Emery later confirmed there was no fresh injury to the Englishman.

Whilst he should be fit enough to start against Wolves, the form of Duran – who netted the incredible winner over Everton – has made this a difficult decision.

Watkins, of course, should be named in the starting XI but after playing two games in the space of five days, rotating him for Duran isn’t out of the question – although unlikely.
