Aston Villa have enjoyed several memorable victories during the course of the 2023/24 season.

The recent Conference League triumph over Ajax is certainly a contender, with Villa Park back to its best on the European stage.

The home victory over Arsenal is also a strong shout, as is the away win at Tottenham.

However, Leon Bailey has other ideas.

Leon Bailey names ‘best’ Aston Villa game this season

Talking whilst on international duty with Jamaica, the former Bayer Leverkusen winger has named the 1-0 home win over Manchester City as his favourite of the 2023/24 campaign.

He told the YouTube channel Let’s Be Honest: “This season, the game that I think was the best game overall in terms of everything. If I didn’t score that game, I would’ve been so upset because I played so well from the start. That was against Manchester City when we won at Villa Park 1-0.”

What were Leon Bailey’s statistics during Aston Villa’s 1-0 win over Manchester City?

Bailey has had a memorable season, scoring eight times and registering eight assists in just 16 Premier League starts. The 26-year-old is averaging a goal contribution at least once a game.

His 74th-minute goal proved decisive in the 1-0 home win over the treble winners, and his previous comment on how well he played certainly rings true.

Per FotMob, the Jamaican registered five shots, three of them hitting the target. He generated an xG of 0.40 and also created two big chances.

Furthermore, he caused City’s defenders issues with three successful dribbles during his 85 minutes on the pitch.

His display in early December felt like a breakthrough moment and the first proper taste of what he can do against the Premier League’s best.

Villa have done well in tying him down to a long-term contract. Failure to do so could have seen some of Europe’s elite clubs show interest.

Up next for Bailey is a Concacaf National League semi-final clash against the United States at the AT&T Stadium in Dallas.
