Jermain Defoe shares what he told Tottenham coach about Aston Villa which has proven to be right

15 Premier League home wins on the bounce. Unthinkable. Miraculous. Staggering. And record-breaking for this Aston Villa side.

Even when Aston Villa were on 13 wins in a row, it was out of this world. But it went up a level or two this past week, starting with that dominant win over Manchester City, and then the resilience shown to see off Arsenal on Saturday.

Former Premier League striker Jermain Defoe seemingly predicted quite a lot of it, as he shared that he had a ‘conversation’ with a Tottenham coach about Aston Villa, as he told Premier League Productions (11/12/23 at 5:30 pm).

The 41-year-old works in Tottenham’s academy and he shared that he predicted Unai Emery’s side to see off Pep Guardiola’s side at Villa Park, so he expected the three points.

But Jermain Defoe was equally impressed that the Midlands side were then able to pick themselves up and showcase serious fight to beat Arsenal.

Of course, this would have come weeks after he would have watched Aston Villa secure three points at Tottenham.

Aston Villa win 15th Premier League home game in a row

On if he thought Villa were capable of winning 15 in a row: “Yes,” Defoe answered sharply.

“I actually got my prediction quite right actually. The Man City game, I had a conversation with a coach at Tottenham I said ‘you know what, I fancy Villa to win, especially at home’.

“The structure. The way they play, hard team to play against and they have a forward in Ollie Watkins who is going to score goals. Really good individuals.

“I did think, after the Man City game, probably a lot was taken out of them, in terms of physical and mental demands.

“But to go to the Arsenal game and win in that game, he deserves so much credit the manager.”

Why not challenge for the Premier League title?

John McGinn might be banning the ’T’ word and not dwelling on title talk, but we will be living it up to the max like Emiliano Martinez.

Are we in a Premier League title race? You bet your bottom dollar we are. Is it likely we will be out of that race come March? Yes.

But there is no point in sport if you don’t enjoy the moment. The aim this season was to finish in the Champions League places.

That target is being met so far, and whilst that is happening, the team should do everything in its power to push and push for the title, even if the inevitable happens.
