Aston Villa need to find a way to get out of their current rut.
After the highs of Unai Emery guiding Villa to the Champions League last season, it’s all turning sour pretty quickly and the Premier League form dictates it.
On Sunday, Chelsea beat Villa 3-0 at Stamford Bridge to make it eight without a win for the Midlands side in all competitions.
Nothing much seems to be going right. Goals are going in for fun. 22 conceded in just 13 matches and the attack is looking pretty blunt.
You just wonder, with the games coming thick and fast over this winter gruelling period, if it is or isn’t a good thing for the side.
Either way, there is going to be a lot of pressure on the players ahead of Villa’s clash against Brentford on Wednesday night – and also the visit of Southampton on Saturday.
You just wonder how the Villa Park crowd is going to react to those games and how they are feeling right now.
Ben Foster shocked by Aston Villa fans being discontent
With Villa going strong in the Champions League, those from the outside might feel that the fans would allow it to paper over the cracks or they would still be pretty pleased with what’s happening this season.
But with Aston Villa sitting in the bottom half of the Premier League table, you can think again and Ben Foster has certainly learnt that.
The former goalkeeper shared that Villa fans told him that ‘we aren’t happy’ with their Premier League form, even though he felt that fans might accept a bit of a downfall because they are playing in Europe’s elite competition.
Foster admitted that he ‘can’t believe it’ and added that ‘you can never please fans’, as he told Ben Foster the Cycling GK on YouTube.

“Massively (struggling),” said Foster about Villa’s form. “That’s just pure emotion that is (Villa only winning one game post-Champions League match).
“That’s just emotional tiredness of getting up for the big game. They have had some unreal games, to be fair, at Villa Park. Unbelievable European nights. Juventus and Bayern Munich. Massive games, with massive emotion – it’s a big ask for them, their first taste of actually doing it. It’s a season of real consolidation. They aren’t going to get Champions League football again this season. You wouldn’t have thought, anyway. The run they have been on in the last six, seven and eight games, has not been good enough, it’s as simple as that.
On if Villa fans would accept poor form given the size of the club: “You have got other teams around them that aren’t dealing with the same sort of thing,” added Foster. “It’s similar to Newcastle last season – I thought they would (accept it because they haven’t played at UCL level for a long time). But I have spoken to a few Villa fans and they were like ‘no, we aren’t happy with this. We aren’t happy with our Premier League form and the way we are doing so far. Buzzing that we have got Champions League football, but we want to be doing better in the Premier League’. And I can’t believe it. We said it last week, Juventus at Villa Park in the Champions League, it’s incredible. What an atmosphere. I want to go to that game. But they still want to win that game and then win in the Premier League. You can’t ever please fans.”
Aston Villa’s upcoming fixtures
From now until the New Year, it’s non-stop action for Villa and things could yet get worse if the players don’t get their act together.
Two home games against Brentford and Southampton this week will dictate that, as well as their final Champions League game of 2024 when they travel to Germany to take on RB Leipzig next week.
From there on in, it’s all Premier League action, which includes five games in front of the supporters and a great chance to turn things around.
