Former England internationals, Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer have passed their opinion on the penalty decision that went against Aston Villa against Everton.

This weekend saw Aston Villa play out a goalless draw with Everton at Goodison Park in a game with very few chances.

The Villans thought they had taken the lead through Alex Moreno who drilled a superb effort into the bottom corner.

After a lengthy VAR check in which Leon Bailey and Clement Lenglet were examined, the goal was ruled out for offside.

Other chances fell to Dominic Calvert Lewin who was kept out superbly by Emi Martinez. There was also a chance for Jhon Duran whose effort flashed wide.

This was the first time that Unai Emery had witnessed a 0-0 as a manager in the Premier League. With that being said, it may have been so much different if a refereeing decision went Villa’s way.

Lineker and Shearer on penalty incident

The incident came about in the second half as Moussa Diaby was given the ball by Bailey inside the Everton box.

Firstly, Vitalii Mykolenko flew in and missed the ball while clipping the Frenchman. The Villa man was too honest, stayed on his feet and carried on.

Following this, James Tarkowski came on with a rough challenge which initially saw him win the ball. His follow-through was nothing short of dangerous as he caught Diaby on the knee. No penalty given.

This was discussed on The Rest is Football podcast. This saw Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer make their opinions clear on the matter.

This started with Lineker saying: “Was it a penalty do you think?”

This was answered quickly as Shearer said: “Yeah.”

The former Leicester City man made his feelings clear as he said: “I thought so as well. I thought it was a blatant penalty.”

They were discussing the Tarkowski challenge which had it been anywhere else on the pitch, likely would have been a foul.

Shearer added to this by saying: “Yeah, I thought it was a penalty. I thought they were very lucky.”

This didn’t seem to even be considered by the referee or VAR as the game had restarted before a replay had even finished. Given that it took nearly four minutes to check an offside, this was frustrating.

A frustrating day for everyone associated with the Villans on the day. It was also frustrating for general fans who are now discussing the referee and VAR.
