Sky Sports pundit, Dan Bardell has given his reaction to the refereeing decisions made as Aston Villa drew 0-0 to Everton.
This weekend posed an opportunity for Aston Villa to move up to joint top spot in the Premier League with a win.
It didn’t go as Unai Emery would have wanted as he suffered his first 0-0 draw in the Premier League as a manager.
The first half saw Alex Moreno slam home an effort from the edge of the box following a short corner routine. An excellent goal but it was ruled out after a near four-minute VAR check due to offside in the build-up.
Dominic Calvert Lewin and James Garner both had guilt edge chances but were both kept out amazingly by Emi Martinez.
The second half had a general lack of chances as John McGinn and Jhon Duran were the players to come closest with no luck.

The 0-0 draw isn’t what was on the minds of Villa fans following the full-time whistle, there was plenty of discussion regarding the referee and VAR.
Dan Bardell slams David Coote
Dan Bardell is a Villa fan and now a Sky Sports News regular and always makes his opinions clear after games. The Everton draw has proved no different.
With VAR getting involved with Moreno’s goal but deciding not to regarding a poor challenge in the box on Moussa Diaby. On the flip side, Coote decided not to send off James Tarkowski despite a cynical challenge while on a booking.
Discussing these things on Twitter, it was clear to see that Bardell wasn’t best pleased with the referee on the day.
On that, he said: “Hard, hard game, Everton made it very difficult for us. Unsure how Tarkowski has stayed on the pitch or how we didn’t get a penalty, but it’s David Coote who I thought was terrible. Thought AVFC were good, couldn’t get a goal, and stood up to the physical side well. Shame.”
There are decisions that go against you throughout the season and this is just another one of those days. On another day, maybe they go for Villa and the result is different.
It is clear to see that Bardell wasn’t a fan of Coote and his decisions but for the most part, they might have gone either way. The penalty is a 50:50 decision but the Tarkowsi one that has to be given, there is no doubt.
A frustrating day but Emery will have to take the point and move on. Luckily for him, there is a break until their next game.
