Aston Villa may have suffered a big blunder in the summer by letting Jaden Philogene exit, as the 22-year-old continues to capture the spotlight at Hull City.

Aston Villa executed an efficient summer of business in the transfer window, as Unai Emery had the opportunity to alter the squad to his liking through signings and sales.

The Spaniard took charge from Steven Gerrard in October 2022, inheriting the squad that the Englishman utilised at Villa Park that he was able to manipulate in preparation for the 2023/24 campaign properly.

Five new faces signed for Villa, with Pau Torres, Moussa Diaby and Youri Tielemans making permanent moves, while Clement Lenglet and Nicolo Zaniolo joined the club on loan.

As well as signings, a host of players departed Villa Park as part of a switch of personnel in the squad, with academy graduate Jaden Philogene leaving his boyhood club by signing for Hull City in a £5m deal.

Jaden Philogene was not part of Unai Emery’s plan at Aston Villa

After spending the entirety of his career on the books at Villa until last summer, Philogene made the decision to leave the club due to his desire to secure consistent game time.

Speaking to The Athletic, the winger admitted that he “wanted to stay” at Villa but the doubts over his future playing time led him to exiting the club to join the Tigers in the Championship.

“I wanted to stay but I didn’t think I was going to get the minutes I needed.”

Having made just six appearances for the Villans’ senior side during his career, the 22-year-old enjoyed loan spells at both Stoke City and Cardiff City to play regularly as his place in the pecking order at Villa was unknown.

At one point in the summer of 2023, the dynamic forward thought that his fate at his boyhood club could change, reciting conversations with Emery to The Athletic after Villa’s pre-season tour in the United States.

“He [Emery] took me into his office and said that I’d be in the squad and I’d be getting minutes, with my work rate and performances standing out.”

When the squad returned to England, reality sunk in, a reality that drove the academy graduate to spread his wings and leave, a decision that has worked out emphatically for him, but perhaps not as well for Villa.

How Jaden Philogene compares to Aston Villa forwards

This summer, Emery welcomed two attackers capable of playing in the wide areas through Zaniolo and Diaby, who replenished the numbers in the position following Emiliano Buendia‘s injury and Philogene’s sale.

Hindsight suggests that Villa didn’t make the correct decision in letting their academy jewel depart, with his talents being lauded over this week for his outrageous goal for Hull, seeing him dubbed a “ridiculous talent” by journalist Dom Howson.

While the goal was cruelly not credited to Philogene and instead an own goal, the winger’s full potential was presented for the world to see, opening conversation over how he could have faired in Emery’s plans.

Paying £51.9m for Diaby was an unquestionably impressive purchase, with the Frenchman considered one of the most exciting talents in Europe after his form at Bayer Leverkusen.

The 24-year-old represented the star quality that Villa required to take their squad up a notch, which can’t be said for fellow summer arrival, Zaniolo.

When comparing Zaniolo to Philogene, it can be said that the signing of the Italian and the sale of the academy gem were two questionable pieces of business by the Villans.

In the Championship this term, the 22-year-old has scored seven goals and recorded five assists in only 17 games for Hull, while Zaniolo has netted just two goals in 26 appearances in all competitions for Villa.

It’s easy to say judge the deals after time has gone by, with Philogene deeming it necessary to leave Villa Park to develop his career, a decision that the club had little reason to argue.

Developing and unleashing an academy star can produce some of the greatest and profitable talents for a club, as Villa know first-hand through the likes of Jack Grealish and current first-teamer, Jacob Ramsey.

Only time will tell just how wrong Villa were to let go of Philogene, with it worth mentioning that Emery’s side can re-sign the graduate for just £15m in the future if they wish.
