Aston Villa have wasted no time completing the bulk of their business ahead of the Premier League campaign kicking off.

Unai Emery is readily preparing his Aston Villa side for a campaign in the Champions League.

The Villans have sanctioned two big exits, namely Moussa Diaby and Douglas Luiz, who have both helped fund what has been a busy summer.

Emery’s most expensive signing was Amadou Onana, with the Belgian powerhouse arriving for £50 million from Everton, while they’ve also re-signed academy graduate Jaden Philogene and Chelsea’s Ian Maatsen, to name a few.

A recurring theme for the Spaniard throughout this window is having one eye on the future and that trend has continued.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Villa have ‘agreed a deal’ to sign Mason Cotcher from Sunderland, who will pen a contract till 2027 today and slot straight into the under-21 setup.

The promising youngster will join a plethora of talents coming through the academy following a successful trial, so with that said, here is everything you need to know about Mason Cotcher.

What is Mason Cotcher’s age and height?

Mason Cotcher was born on September 4, 2006. As of August 2024, he is 17 years old. He also stands at 1.80 metres which is five foot nine inches.

What is Mason Cotcher’s position?

During his short career so far, Cotcher has mostly played as a striker in the youth teams but he can also operate as an attacking midfielder.

Who has Mason Cotcher played for?

Cotcher spent several years at Sunderland but the teenager also had trials for Arsenal, Manchester United and Leeds United in the 2023/24 season.

What are Mason Cotcher’s stats?

At the age of 17, Cotcher has never experienced first-team football at Sunderland but the striker has been prolific in the under-age groups. For Sunderland’s under-18s, he scored nine goals in 19 appearances during the 2022/23 campaign.

The Englishman also netted three times during a trial at Leeds United last season, including strikes against Liverpool and former club Sunderland.

Has Mason Cotcher made his first-team debut?

No, but at the start of 2023, he was among the substitutes for Sunderland’s FA Cup tie against Shrewsbury Town. Aged 16 at the time, it would have been a special moment for the youngster to make his debut in the prestigious competition.

What role will Mason Cotcher play at Aston Villa?

Villa are being smart with their recruitment and signing players who fit into their philosophy for the future. Although he could have played first-team football at Sunderland very soon, a new contract wasn’t agreed with the Black Cats and he’ll instead continue his development in Villa’s youth academy.

The teenage striker does still qualify for the under-18s but last term, he did appear once in Premier League 2 and that is where he’s likely to play for the Villans.

From there, much like other young players have done – including Omari Kellyman, now of Chelsea – Cotcher will be eager to impress enough to earn some first-team minutes in the future.

Nonetheless, signing the Sunderland sensation is only a sign that Villa continue to head in the right direction after he impressed on trial.
